The primary characteristic of our village is the reputation that it has concerning the pottery and especially the creation of big jars called “pitharia”. Observing the materials, the forms and the technique of the manufacture (specifically of big jars) but also the way of baking that our ancient ancestors used, you feel that this unique art has passed through centuries without radical changes and is continued even today in Thrapsano. No one can escape this sensation during the visit of the palace, how more the potters who feel their hands have followed the path which unfolded by Minoan potters. Besides that it must be mentioned the discovery of Minoan era’s remains (not yet fully investigated), just few Kilometers west of Thrapsano in the village of Galatas (a municipal district of the municipality of Thrapsano). Many pottery workshops are all over Thrapsano territory continuing the art that give us the identity of “Pitharas” (jar maker) and make us hopeful that this art is going to be delivered to our sons.
